It is appropriate to link the evolution of Sri Lanka Mithuhamuwa to the Ceylon Association in Scandinavia of the early 1970’s . Up to that time the Sri Lankans living in Denmark met each other during functions at Consulate General of Ceylon which was closely linked to the Ceylon Tea Center, both organizations occupying the same premises in the center of Copenhagen. There was also the Danish Ceylon Association which was mainly run by the Consulate General, and so the need for an organization independent of that Association. Sri Lankan community was very small at the time; members met at Association meetings held invariably at someone’s home. The big event organized was the Christmas party particularly for the benefit of the children. The Association was also engaged in representing matters affecting the welfare of Sri Lankans in general, to the Sri Lanka Embassy in Sweden through the Consulate General. With the closure of the Consulate General and the Tea Centre in Copenhagen in 1972/73, and due to the members moving out of Copenhagen The Sri Lanka Association in Scandinavia became inactive and ultimately defunct. In the late 1980,s Sri Lankans of a younger generation came to settle down in Denmark and the need for an organization to get them together was greatly felt, and so was born Sri Lanka Mithuhamuwa in the Year 1989. In that Year the Society's first attempt to organize the Sinhala/Tamil New Year festival , the very first of that kind in Denmark ever, was a grand success. Sri Lankans came from all corners of Denmark and this enabled wider contact. The success of the event gave a tremendous boost to the moral of the Society and encouraged the members to continue organizing the festival every Year, in a grand scale. The Society also organizes the Christmas party. It is proper to mention that on these occasions the Society manages to tap the talents and capabilities already available within theSri Lankan community in Denmark. These various artists may not equal the professionals, but their performances and innovative skills depicting Sri Lanka Culture, definitely have impressed the people who come to the festivals every Year. Among other activities, the Society encourages and assists philanthropic ventures; in a modest way it has organized the collection of funds for donation to the disabled war heroes of the Sri Lanka Army. The working language of Sri Lanka Mithuhamuwa is Sinhala. However any inquiries may be made in Tamil, Danish or English. |
